A Day Trip to Passau
While we clearly haven't seen even a fraction of what Munich has to offer in terms of sights and markets, we were also interested in visiting one of the smaller markets in the area, one of them is Passau. Given that the rest of this trip will be spent in bigger cities, we took the opportunity Tuesday to take the 2 hours train ride to visit this small town which is situated at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. The town is also a stop on the Viking and other companies doing river cruises.
Wednesday was the first day for Passau's Christmas market and there was also information online that there would be a noon hour concert in the famous St. Stephan's Cathedral there. That cathedral is noteworthy as it has the largest pipe organ in Europe. It may also be second in the world behind the one in the Bon Marche (yes, in a department store) in Philadelphia. While we managed to get to the church at noon, sadly the information on the Web was incorrect - no concert. However, we did have the opportunity to wander around the stalls, sample some churros, Eierpunsch (basically hot egg nog with booze), a1/2 meter long Wurst (not me), and a chocolate ball filled with salted caramel-flavoured whipped cream (not me).
Doesn't that remind you of Oak Bay High School? Foot-long hot dogs on Thursdays, if I remember rightly, sold by the Grade 13 boys! (The ones who needed an extra year to complete their Grade 12 for graduation.
